Here’s the list of materials you’ll need

  • Software for photo editing or to create your own design.
  • Magnets: There are three types, magnetic tape rolls, self-adhesive magnets, magnetic paper for inkjet or laser printers.
  • Glue, if your magnets are not self-adhesive.
  • Printer.
  • Scissors or a blade (like the Exacto blades).
Super original DIY save the date magnets.

Let’s Get Crafty!

1First, determine what type of magnet you want to work with as this will define your design size. Magnetic sheets are the easiest to use but they are also the thinnest. Magnetic rolls without adhesive are the thickest and you can cut them to any size you want.

2Now that you have the appropriate dimensions, design your Save the Date invitation. Remember to include at least the basic information: that you are getting married, both your names and the date of the wedding. You may also indicate that the formal invitation will arrive soon, where or how to get more information about the wedding, or if you expect them to respond to a phone number or email to confirm their attendance.

3The next step you can do at home with your own printer or commission the printing of your design to a printing and copying center or to a printer. If you print them at home, make sure your printer settings are set to the quality level required for printing on photo paper.

4Time to glue the magnets! If your magnets are the same size as your save-the-date, make sure they are well aligned and glue them together. If you decided to work with magnet rolls or magnetic sheets, print the design on the sheet and then cut the magnets with the Exacto knife. Now, if the magnets are self-adhesive, just remove the protective film and stick them to the back of your Save the Dates. Otherwise, use glue.

5Let the magnets dry. Now mail them or hand them out!

How to Choose a Wedding Venue: Wedding Planning Tips You Must Read

About to choose a wedding venue? Stop and read these wedding planning tips to help you land the venue that fits your budget, style and all of your guests!

Florida wedding venue. Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach.

Florida wedding venue. Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach.

The wedding venue may often set the tone for the rest of your wedding. No pressure, right? Allow us to help you by breaking down the process of choosing a wedding venue. Find out what to consider before touring the locations. What questions to ask get the information you need to land the reception space of your dreams. 🙂

How to Choose a Wedding Venue: It’s Definition Time!

If you are about to choose a wedding venue you will be overwhelmed by the number of banquet halls, spaces, outdoor locations and more that will pop up on Google. Let’s bring it down a notch. Stop the searching, grab a calendar, pen and paper and follow the yellow-brick road. 😉

Before starting to look for the ideal venue you must define four things: the date, your wedding style, the number of guests, and your budget.

First of all, pick a date. You will need to check if the place you picked is available on that date before even considering touring the venue. So, the date will definitely will be one of your filters. If budget is a concern, keep in mind that prices are more affordable from Sunday to Thursday and higher on Friday and Saturday as well as during peak wedding season. If you’re not getting married on-site, check in dates with your church or City Hall first before booking the reception venue. Date: Check!

Intimate weddings are very much on trend. Organic and intimate destination wedding in Italy.

Next, the wedding style. The wedding venue you pick will help you define and frame your wedding theme. If you are looking for a summery vibe to your reception, consider a country, garden, or beach wedding.

Modern couples can look into lofts, warehouses, art galleries. Check out these modern industrial raw spaces if you live in New York! Remember that when you engage a raw space, the rentals do not come included in the package. Consider all the extras in the price for a more fair comparison between wedding venues.

Non-traditional couples may look for unique and eclectic event spaces, such as zoos, public libraries, museums, and even old train stations. These spaces in Los Angeles will give you an idea to start with. (but do not make a decision yet!)

Intimate weddings are very much on trend. You can go as small as your own backyard (so cool!) or as fancy as renting a vacation home and make it a weekend celebration. Who knows? It may end up being more affordable that a traditional reception venue. Talk about an unforgettable experience! At the end of this article, we’ve added a wedding venue size calculator, just in case you want to host the shindig at home. 😉

Now, let’s estimate the guest count. It is highly recommended that you build a preliminary count which you can adjust later. Reception venues will ask you for this number in order to give you a quote. You will also use the guest count to perform your preliminary research. Be mindful of the fact that there are always last minute additions and that just because a venue tells you it can fit 150 people, it does not mean you have to cram them all up.

Finally, the budget! How much can you afford to spend on the wedding venue? We highly recommend sticking to this budget or you will have to do away with those coveted ice sculptures, your dream wedding gown, or the open bar you so badly wanted for your guests. 🙁

How to Choose a Wedding Venue: Perform a Preliminary Online Search

Yes! Let’s bring Google back! The first step is collecting all of the information available to you about the potential wedding venues. Try not to overwhelm yourself with too many event spaces. Start with a few reception places and go from there. Stay organized by building a spreadsheet, it will help you figure out who you’d like to visit in person. Remember, you still have a few more steps to go.

Try to find the following information from each venue’s website: Name of the venue, address, website, phone number & other contact information, capacity, pricing Information, and why you liked it.

It is likely that not all of this information will be available on the website; and you may need to call or email the venue to get everything you need. At least by collecting all of this information you can compare them side by side.

How to Choose a Wedding Venue: Prepare for Touring the Wedding Venues

Now, let’s boil down your list to a manageable size. Email or call the prospective spaces and find out if they are available on your date. If so, coordinate an in-person visit, preferably when it’s set up for a wedding. It will give you a better idea of the space available.

Ask them if you’ll have exclusive use of the venue on that day. Every banquet hall or wedding venue differs in the amount of privacy provided. Some offer separate bathrooms and dressing rooms, some share the parking space area. If you are getting married in a public space, you’d better make your piece with strangers stopping by and giving you their good wishes.

Ask as many questions as possible beforehand so you can concentrate on visualizing your wedding and checking those details you have to verify in person.

Questions to Ask a Wedding Venue When Visiting (or Before!)

So you have an appointment with a venue on-site coordinator. You want to make sure this time is well-spent, so what should you ask? Start by making sure you can fill in all the blanks of the spreadsheet you created. Here are a few more questions that will help you choose a wedding venue that fits your requirements.

Layout and Accommodations Questions

  • Is there a bridal-changing area?
  • How much parking is available? Is valet parking an option? If the parking is limited, is there nearby parking available? Ensure it is easy for the guests to arrive comfortably to your wedding. They will thank you for it.
  • Is the venue handicap accessible? Make sure everyone feels welcomed.
  • How many bathrooms are available and what is their capacity?
  • Make sure that there is space for all the activities and details that you have planned for your wedding: the guestbook signing, the dinner, the cocktails, the dessert table and the cake, the dance floor, the band, the photo booth and a few lounging areas!
  • If your guests will travel to your wedding you need to offer them lodging. Find out if the wedding venue has at least a couple of hotels nearby with available rooms. Your guests will really appreciate if you offer them a third and cheaper option.

Wedding Planning Questions

  • What time can vendors arrive to start setting up and then dismantling the wedding decor?
  • What are the wedding decor restrictions? Are there any guidelines, restrictions or policies on using real candles? Is it a raw space? If not, what table and chair styles do they provide? Do you need a special permit for your wedding arch?
  • What refrigeration is available? (This is important if you are using live flowers or cake with frosting that could melt)
  • Is the venue licensed for providing or servicing alcohol? Is there hirable bar staff? What is the rate for the staff, service, and drink?
  • Are there any noise ordinances you need to respect? If the venue does not allow for music after 10pm and you plan to continue the party until the wee hours of the morning, that’s not a good fit. Unless you plan on an after-party somewhere else.
  • Is there a contingency plan provided by the fabulous vineyard in case it rains? An indoor space or a tent?
  • If you would like to host a romantic wedding, a daytime wedding or a cocktail at sunset, check that the place can provide you with the lighting you want and need.
  • How far is it from the church? Or is there a space to celebrate the religious ceremony?

Pricing Questions

  • Are there discounts available for booking off-season or on Sunday through Friday?
  • What are the terms of the deposit? Is it refundable and when is it due?
  • What is the cancellation policy?
  • Are rentals (tables, chairs, linens, table clothes, or glassware) included in the price? If so, which ones?
  • Make sure when you are looking for potential venues that you clearly understand what’s included and what isn’t. Examples of this are catering and wedding menus, beverages, and centerpieces.
  • Are there any vendor restrictions? If the venue offers catering in-house, find out if you can do a tasting before the wedding.
  • Does the venue have liability insurance?

Don’t book the first venue you see, even if you fall in love with it. Choose at least three or four wedding venues that fit your budget and wedding style and ask for quotes. Be prepared to take notes and lots of photos!

Ask for the wedding venue quotes. Make sure you get as much information as possible to choose a wedding venue that you will be happy with. It’s your day, after all!

Wedding Venue Size Calculator

All venues will help you find out how many guests can fit in a banquet hall or reception venue for different seating plans. But, if you are holding your wedding affair at home, in a garden or at another outdoor venue, it is useful to know how to calculate how many guests can be accommodated in a given space. You do not want your guests feeling cramped at your wedding.

Measure the length and the width of the area in feet. Multiply the two numbers together to get the area in square feet. If the space is uneven, you need to break it up into squares, rectangles or triangles, calculate the area for each and then add them up.

Now divide this number by 2 as you may safely estimate that 50% of the area will be used for aisles, staging, waiters, dance floor, catering stations, and other. The remaining area will accommodate your guests.

Wedding ceremony decor for raw spaces. 40 tissue paper poms.

Wedding ceremony decor for raw spaces. 40 tissue paper poms.

Use the following guidelines to calculate capacity:

* For every round banquet table that seats 10 people, calculate 30 square feet.
* Calculate 3 square feet per person for a stand-up reception.

However, each room or space is different. You need to take into account the shape, locations of doors, fire exits, columns; buffet dinner or seated dinner set up, and so on. As a rule of thumb, 1,000 square feet is adequate for 80 wedding guests at a sit-down wedding. For each ten additional guests, add an additional 200 square feet of space.

With this small checklist you are ready to go and choose a wedding venue that is perfect for you. Just one last piece of advice, once you have set your reception hall budget don’t go see places that far exceed it. And now, let’s read about wedding reception seating!

The Groom’s Tie: How to Choose the Right Color and Style for the Big Day

Discover how to choose the right color and style for the groom’s tie and have him look picture perfect on your big day!

Floral groom's tie, perfect for a modern or boho wedding.

Floral groom’s tie, perfect for a modern or boho wedding.

There is a fair amount of time spent picking out what the bride will be wearing on the big day, but it is important not to overlook the groom’s style. Let’s be honest, we know the bride is going to get the majority of the attention here, but the groom is going to want to look and feel great too, after all.

How To Choose the Right Color and Style for the Big Day

Sorry guys, when it comes down to the color of your tie, I’m sure the bride will have a say. But if your wedding palette has two colors, the groom can wear one of the shades while the rest of the guys wear the other.

Now that the color has been decided, let’s move on to picking the right groom’s tie. Many grooms email us asking about the fabric of a particular tie so I decided I could give a little rundown of the most common fabrics for ties.

The Groom’s Tie: How to Pick the Fabric

It’s best to start with the month the wedding will be held. Fabrics like cotton and linen who are light and breezy are perfect for summery weddings. Other fabrics like wool, tweed, cashmere and different wool blends are more suited for the winter.

Rayon, polyester and silk wear well all year round. But buyer beware when it comes down to silk neckties! There are many kinds of silk out there and the quality varies. The most commonly used for men’s ties are doupioni silk (its threads are uneven and irregular), shantung (very smooth and has hardly any slubs), silk linen (it actually has the look of linen) and satin which is glossy and smooth on one side and matte on the other.

The Groom’s Tie: Let’s Get To Know Their Styles

What to wear? What to wear? Depending on the formality of the affair, you may want to take your pick of the following types and styles of groom’s ties. But you must also consider the collar style and width before picking the tie! Let’s review some of the groom’s tie styles.

The Necktie

A classic. This is the long tie most commonly associated with working in an office. But, that’s not to say it should not be worn for a wedding. Match the tie to the wedding colors to give a splash of color and fun to the groom’s look.

The Ascot

If your groom has been searching his entire life for an excuse to wear an Ascot, now is the time. An ascot is much more formal and is a folded tie that is wider than a necktie and usually won with a stickpin or tie tack. Typically, Ascots are a patterned material, but they can be neutral, think blacks or grays, or the wedding colors to match the décor.

Bow Tie

Bow ties are a symmetrical ribbon of fabric that tie together to form two loops that sit at the collar of the groom’s dress shirt. Most commonly, bow ties are worn with tuxedos, but fun, patterned bow ties also pair well with suits. Grooms can wear black bow ties for very formal looks or match the bridesmaid’s dresses when wearing a tuxedo.

Euro Tie or Cravat

The Euro Tie is a middle ground between necktie and Ascot. It’s a long tie with a square bottom, knotted at the beck and worn with a spread collar shirt. It’s formal but not quite Ascot-level formal.

Here is a great tip for grooms to look great on your big day. Make sure the widest part of your tie matches the width of the lapel chosen for your wedding.

How to “Tie The Knot”: The Half-Windsor Knot

There are many ways to tie a knot (pun intended) 😉 but today we will share how to tie the Half-Windsor knot! Medium to light thickness for ties are this year’s trend. Therefore, the half-Windsor is easier and more fitting. It is also nice and symmetrical but not quite as bulky as the Windsor knot.

Remember that your body type matters when picking a tie. The half-Windsor is narrower and longer and looks best on slimmer taller guys.

  1. Lay the tie around your neck and stand in front of a mirror. The wide end should be on your right and the small or narrow end should be on your left when looking into the mirror. The wider end should hang about 12 inches lower than the smaller end.
  2. In front of you, cross the wide end over the narrow end, making an “X.”
  3. Still holding the wide end, go under the small end and to the right
  4. Now, pull the wide end up to the center towards the necktie
  5. Bring the wide end through the neck loop from the front towards the back and left.
  6. Cross the wide end over the narrow end to the right
  7. Now bring it upwards again, this time from beneath the neck loop
  8. Pull it through the loop you just created in the front and then straight down
  9. Use both hands to adjust the tie until it sits tight under your collar.
  10. You look terrific!! 🙂

Simplicity at the bride and groom's table with chairs that complement the wedding table decor to perfection.

Simplicity at the bride and groom’s table with chairs that complement the wedding table decor to perfection.

If you’re the type that’s been dreaming of your wedding your whole life, you might know exactly what you want your wedding reception tables to look like. If you don’t, then you are in the right place. Use this checklist to choose what to put on wedding reception tables and get inspired by some stunning wedding table ideas that will sweep you off your feet!

How to Decorate Wedding Reception Tables

When styling a wedding reception table, there are a myriad of options to choose from to achieve your desired look. Here’s a short checklist to keep in mind when decorating your wedding tables.

1. The tables themselves: tables come in all shapes and sizes, but wedding tables are somewhat standardized. 😉 From round to square, your tables may be so stunningly beautiful that you may want to show them off. A good example would be rustic heavy wooden tables, too gorgeous to hide under a tablecloth.

2. Table linens: From simple white to luxurious heavy silk brocade or modern sequined tablecloths, table linens help set your table style. Spend some time considering the colors of your napkins, linens, skirting and table runners and their impact on your reception decor.

3. Place settings: This refers to setting the table with tableware which includes utensils, glasses, dishes, etc. Each individual set is called a place setting. You may choose to go with a formal or an informal setting for your sit-down dinner. Or no setting at all if you are going for a cocktail wedding reception! 😉

Tip: Remember to match your utensils to your wedding menu items or courses.

4. Centerpieces: Tall, hanging, short or even as table runners with wreaths of greenery, make sure the wedding centerpieces match your wedding theme and do not block your guests’ view of the rest of the people at the table. You can go with lanterns, bird cages, floating candles, votives, floral wedding centerpieces or a mix of these. There is so much variety to choose from! (Check out this affordable wedding centerpieces article for more inspiration and fabulous and simple DIYs!)

5. Place cards and table numbers: Your escort cards, place cards and/or table numbers can be subtle or used to make a statement besides helping you with your seating arrangements. You can do away with them if you choose to have your guests sit wherever they like. These adorable and creative pieces, really do come in handy at a sit-down dinner as it makes it easier for your waiters to deliver specially ordered menus – like those gluten-free, kosher or vegetarian options – to your guests when you know where they are sitting.

6. Other additions to help you decorate wedding reception tables: Add a few surprises to your wedding table decor such as wedding favors and conversation ice-breakers. A few crayons or papers for them to add a well wish for the newlyweds can be a great conversation starter. You may also want to add wedding menus with a small lavender sprig or vine leaf on top of the plates.

7. Chairs: Usually a forgotten item even though they can really help spruce up the place. 😉 Look for comfort, style, and quality. The last thing you want at your wedding reception is a guest that gets hurt because the chair was too flimsy. Chair covers, original sashes, affordable baby’s breath and greenery decor can help you add that stunning personal touch to your wedding chairs. Feel free to browse some chair decor and other original wedding ideas on this article!

8. Table lighting: Nothing transforms your reception table ambiance more than the right lighting. Get inspired by twinkling lights, LEDs, chandeliers, candles and more to create an unforgettable dining space.

Wedding Table Ideas on a Budget

If you want to save money on your reception tables decor, there are plenty of affordable and amazing wedding table ideas to pick from. Here are a few of them.

  • Long live DIY! If you, or someone you know, is crafty, make the centerpieces and other wedding table decor yourself. Fill glasses or vases with strings of lights or votive candles, purchase your own fabric for your tablecloths or table runners or create your own flower arrangements.
  • If you are hosting a buffet-styled reception, use chic plastic plates and plastic “silverware” that look like the real thing instead of renting expensive china. This will help cut down on the cleaning costs as well. 😉

  • Glassware can also double as party favors. Use customized or personalized wine, pint or mason jar glasses for each place setting that your guests can take home at the end of the wedding reception. You can have them engraved with your names, initials and the wedding date or you can tie on a small tag with a note and a ribbon.
  • Grab old pieces of reclaimed wood, vintage jars and vases, or thrift store candles and trinkets to create unique and stunning wedding centerpieces. Tie the look together with inexpensive ribbons, or not. 😉
