The difference between macarons and macaroons
Their spelling and pronunciation is similar. Heck! They even start off with with a base of egg whites and sugar. But the similarities end there. This is what macarons and macaroons are made of and look like:
Macarons: egg whites, sugar, almond flour and food coloring. Macarons are round, crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside.
Macaroons: egg whites, sugar, and shredded coconut. Macaroons are conical in shape.

Wedding macarons and French macarons: their origin
The Macaron is a simple cookie born in Italy in 1533, at the time of the wedding between Catherine de Medicis and the Duc d’Orleans who later became king of France in 1547 as Henry II. This round cookie was made of almond powder, egg whites and sugar.
Come the 20th century and a French pastry maker called Pierre Desfontaines (grandson of Louis Ernest Laduree from the famous pastry salon at Rue de Royale in Paris) decides to add a chocolate ganache between two of the macaron cookies. This new sandwich looking delicacy is called the “French macaron”
