The cake topper shines from its place of honor atop the wedding cake for all your guests to see. So, let’s make sure you choose the wedding cake topper that represents you both with pride!

Today, my pretties, we’ll cover the topper’s origin, styles, trends and tips to help you choose yours and how to make sure it fits your cake! We have even added a few DIYs so you can make them yourself if money is a bit scarce or you are just plain crafty!

There is a lot to know about wedding cake toppers, so let’s get to it!

What is a Wedding Cake Topper?

Besides a wedding cake statuette or decor that sits on top of it, wedding cake toppers represent the happy couple. So, the question here is, what would represent you both? Flowers, greenery, a cute figurine or a funny one, maybe?

Traditionally, wedding cake toppers consist of a bride and groom figurine that sit on top of the wedding cake. Nowadays, the trend is personalizing these classic figurines to show off the personality of the bride and groom to be. They range from classic and elegant to the very geeky, including some highly personalized toppers that look exactly like the bride and groom!

The Secret Story of the Wedding Cake Toppers

Where did wedding cake toppers originate? The exact details of its origin are surrounded by mystery. Nobody really knows when this tradition was incorporated into weddings but legend tells us that over a century ago, a baker’s daughter was about to be married and asked her father for a special wedding gift. She asked him to create a symbol of the love that she and her future husband professed to each other. Therefore, everybody would be able to see it.

After careful consideration, the father decided upon a unique creation, a gorgeous wedding cake with two fabulous figurines on top of the highest tier. Obviously, the figurines were a representation of his daughter and her future husband. The baker had created the wedding cake topper as the perfect symbol of love and wedded bliss.

On the day of her wedding, the daughter was so moved by the figurines her father had so lovingly crafted that she stated that it was the best of all the gifts. The wedding cake and the topper were placed where they could be seen by everybody at the reception.

Maybe this tale is just an anecdote but it doesn’t take away from the importance and meaning of the wedding cake toppers. Maybe now, you’ll look at the toppers under a very different light. 🙂

Tips To Find Your Perfectly Unique Topper!

Read these tips before choosing your perfect wedding cake topper:

1The cake topper must be a piece that reflects your style as well as the cake’s. It may be a tad more expensive but it will be worth it. Remember, this is a keepsake. If you’re on a tight budget you can DIY your own, or you may choose the traditional figurines that are sold in stores or a few simple flowers to show your love and decorate your wedding cake. Just make sure that they match both yours and the wedding cake styles.

2Let’s get creative! You can choose from a personalized cake topper that looks just like  both of you or something that represents a mutual interest or a shared hobby. The personalized wedding cake topper is a very creative detail and it adds an additional layer of romance, sparkle and glamour to the wedding reception.

3Ask your master baker to suggest a few cake topper design ideas that match your chosen confection and pick the one you feel represents you best!

4Now, here’s a romantic, ecological and affordable idea. Honor your parents, grandparents or somebody very close to you by adorning your wedding cake with the topper that they used at their wedding! Adorable, amiright?

5Sizing the cake topper. The wedding topper should complement the cake both in design and material, and also in size. The top of the cake is where the topper usually sits, so the topper should be in proportion to the top tier. Traditionally the cake topper height was half of the diameter of the top tier. Modern toppers are generally a half an inch taller. As far as the width of the cake topper, it should be no more than that of the cake itself. Again, traditionally the width of the topper should allow for an inch of cake space on either side, although like everything else about weddings, rules are made to be broken. Just make sure the topper does not fall off the cake! 🙂

6Consider the weight of the topper. A cake topper that is too heavy, may need additional support in the cake, and you know that means it will cost you more.

No matter what style you choose for your wedding cake topper make sure it matches your personality and your wedding theme. Remember this is a keepsake, a memento from your wedding that you will cherish forever. Wedding cake toppers are not just figurines on top of a cake. They represent the love that flows between two hearts joined forever as one.

There are enough decisions to make when it comes to planning your wedding day, amirite? Arguably the most fun part of planning your wedding is the cake testing day. Sitting around trying dozens of cake combinations, making sure the flavors perfectly compliment each other is a hard day’s work. We are available to help if needed, just saying. 😉

A Wedding Cake Flavors List: Textures and Trends

You picked the cake design but what will the cake taste like? Wedding cakes are made up of tiers or cake layers. Each tier can be a different texture and/or flavor.

The variety of wedding cake flavors can be overwhelming, to say the least. Let’s start with a list of the most popular wedding cake flavors. Although if you are a trendy bride, you may want to pick one of the latest and trending wedding cake flavors.

Pumpkin squash, dulce de leche, blueberry berry, champagne, lemon, and chocolate are really hot this year. As you can plainly see, they range from the tried-and-true classics to the more elaborate and stylish flavors.

Now, let’s check the wedding cake textures and what they taste like

Chiffon Cake: A very light and fluffy cake made with vegetable oil. It can be stored or frozen without drying out.

Sponge Cake: Sponge cake is firmer and good for stacking cake layers on top of one another. It can have different flavors, like vanilla, lemon or Belgian chocolate.

Cheesecake: An alternative to the traditional cake, a baked vanilla cheesecake with a crumbly biscuit base.

Carrot cake: Carrot cake usually has a soft, dense texture, and of course, carrots mixed into the batter.

Banana walnut cake: The banana walnut cake is a sweet and delicious dessert that will impress anyone!

Almond cake: Light, moist and velvety and quite typical of certain parts of Spain. Ole!

Champagne cake: A champagne infused cake with classic vanilla buttercream is the perfect way to celebrate a wedding!

Red Velvet cake: Red Velvet cake is traditionally a red or red-brown layer cake topped with white cream cheese or cooked roux icing.

Spice cake: Traditionally flavored with a mixture of spices. Predominant flavorings include spices such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice, ginger and nutmeg.

Devil’s Food Cake: Devil’s food cake is a moist, airy, rich chocolate layer cake.

Let’s Talk about Frosting

There are just as many options for the frosting or icing as there are for the cake, not only in flavor but in texture and consistency. The Williams-Sonoma cookbook Cake states that “icing is generally thinner and glossier,” while its counterpart frosting is “a thick, fluffy mixture, used to coat the outside of a cake.”

Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of frosting and icing for wedding cakes:

  • Buttercream. This is the most popular frosting flavor made of butter, powdered sugar, and any flavoring you like. Definitely taste test your baker’s buttercream because there are so many variations, each buttercream type can be very different.
  • Meringue. This is a smooth, creamy frosting made with egg whites, sugar and flavorings. This is especially perfect for beach weddings, as it holds up well in the heat and will not melt.
  • Fondant. This is a paste-like icing that gives the sugar a very even finish, giving the cake a smooth texture. It is a bit chewy, so not everyone enjoys the texture when eating it but it can give a very refined look to the finished cake.
  • Ganache. This is chocolate melted with heavy cream. This will give a very shiny glaze to the cake, or it can be whipped for a more “fluffy” effect.

And the trending frosting this year is whipped cream! Yum! Of course, you can always skip the frosting and go for a naked cake or for the cake of the year, the drip cake!

Now, let’s cover the best wedding cake flavor combinations! 🙂

Fall wedding cake flavors. Gone are the light flavors of citrus and summer fruits. Autumn events favor decadently rich desserts, such as this wedding cake drizzled with salted caramel and decorated with figs.

Best Wedding Cake Flavors, Fillings, and Combinations

Ok, if you are not hungry already, you are about to be. We have already discussed the cake flavor and the icing, but there is also the matter of the filling. How do you combine all three of these glorious, delicious components to create the perfect symphony of wedding cake flavors?

Here is a list of recommended combos that will hopefully wrap the perfect bow on your final cake choice.

  • Chocolate-gasm: There is no shame in making every single wedding guest love chocolate as much as you do. Set chocolate cake with a chocolate mousse filling and chocolate buttercream and the guests will be dancing, if not from happiness then from the sugar rush.
  • Vanilla Raspberry-licious: Vanilla sponge cake with raspberry jam filling and a marzipan frosting. Do we need to say more? The tartness of the raspberry will perfectly offset the sweetness of the vanilla and marzipan. And it’s fruit so you can pretend it’s healthy too.
  • Carrot Cream Cheese Craze: We all know (and most of us love) carrot cake. It can be a bit of a divisive topic but if you don’t like carrot cake, we can all agree on one thing, the cream cheese frosting makes it all worth it. And this is a vegetable, so it’s definitely healthy!
  • Need We Say S’More: A traditional bonfire treat meets a classy day in delicious s’mores flavored wedding cake. Accomplish this by having a graham cracker cake set with chocolate ganache, marshmallows, and vanilla buttercream. You can even toast the outside marzipan for full effect.
  • Raspberry Dacquoise Cake. Almond-and-hazelnut meringue joins vanilla buttercream laced with raspberries and crème framboise in this divine standout, complete with sage-green fondant and piped golden raspberries.
  • Lemon meringue buttercream-y: Fresh and summery lemon cake with raspberry mousse and Swiss meringue buttercream filling.

How to Pick Your Perfect Cake Flavor: A Final Word

As you can tell from the lists above, there are an overwhelming array of options to choose from when selecting the perfect wedding cake flavor. So how do you decide? How do you come to the conclusion that a specific cake is the perfect one for your big day?

Here are a few tips:

  • Choose your favorite flavors or wedding cake flavors that have a special meaning to you. Don’t worry about pleasing everyone or making a ‘safe’ choice. After all, this is your cake and your wedding day.
  • Be Mindful of Your Wedding Season or Your Dinner Menu. Are you getting married in the summer? Then a coconut, lime-flavored cake might fit perfectly. Are you having an Italian inspired wedding menu? Then you might want to incorporate some cannoli filling to your cake.
  • Research. Look into what cake flavors are emerging in popularity. Meet with different bakeries and schedule consultations where you can taste the flavors, so you know exactly what you are getting.
  • If you really can’t decide, choose multiple flavors. Who says your cake has to have a single flavor? Where is it written that you must have only have only one cake, for that matter? There are endless ways to be create on today’s weddings. If you want multiple cake flavors, indulge! Your guests will be delighted to have choices.

We are happy to report that we have thousands more ideas for wedding cake flavors and combinations to help you choose yours. Check out the photos below!

The Cuban-Inspired Wedding: A Tropical Trend with Lots of Sabor

Throw the perfect Cuban-inspired wedding bash with these easy tips and must haves featuring Havana cigars, Señoritas and mojitos!

Imagine your wedding. Hanging greenery, colorful flowers as centerpieces, candles in pink votives over a rustic wood table with wooden folding chairs. Parrot optional.

Imagine your wedding. Hanging greenery, colorful flowers as centerpieces, candles in pink votives over a rustic wood table with wooden folding chairs. Parrot optional.

Mix vintage deco, retro and abundantly lush greenery together and your fantastic Cuban-inspired wedding theme is almost ready.

The renewed interest in Cuban culture, with its bright and tropical colors coupled with fluid flamenco-style bridal gowns, has become a trend in this year’s weddings. Their color palette of deep purples, turquoise, tangy mandarin, bright corals, sunny yellows, playful fuchsias and greenery (Pantone’s color of the year) has all the ingredients for a fun and carefree wedding. Complete the Cuban-inspired wedding theme with Latin food and drinks and delicious rum infused cocktails.

Cuban-Inspired Wedding Decor: The Kingdom of Art Deco

Cuba is an exotic place brimming with passion. A Cuban-inspired wedding will reflect the couple’s passionate love for each other. With a fusion of Spanish, African and Caribbean cultures, Cuba offers ample inspiration for the reception’s food, music and attire.

The wedding decor will be the final touch that will complete the illusion of a Cuban adventure for guests. One only has to imagine Havana in the twenties to paint the scene at the house of an “hacendado” on a tobacco or sugar plantation. Carved wood with floral motifs, voluptuous palm trees and ferns, broad cane chairs and a wedding palette with brushstrokes of brown, turquoise, orange, ivory and of course the Pantone color of the year, greenery in the centerpieces, and on the tableware and cushions.

Have some antiques handy? Decorate the room with them. Take advantage of old Cuban cigar boxes if you have any, or use rum bottles to save on creative centerpieces with tropical flowers such as heliconias, birds of paradise or orchids. Place a cigar with a personalized label as a wedding favor on each plate. Now we are getting fancy!

Accompany the Cuban-inspired wedding decor with an exotic menu and cocktails with a defined Cuban accent. So bring out the rum. It’s time to have fun in an elegant way!

Tropical Cuban-Inspired Weddings with Cuban “Sabor”: Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

Mojitos are the perfect cocktail for Cuban-inspired weddings. Accompany them with tempting meat pies or “empanadas” and crispy tostones. Among other drinks, you can serve Cuba Libre, which is a mixture of rum, Coca-Cola and lime juice, or mojitos with non-traditional flavors such as peach, cherry or pineapple. Do not forget to add some Cuban-inspired non-alcoholic beverages such as guava, coconut, or lime flavored water.

Here is a very ingenious idea for a mojito bar. Use fresh mint to make unique ice cubes. Take a little mint, put it in each of the ice tray spaces and then fill it with water. Let the water turn into ice and there you have it. Great idea for a summer wedding.

The Blushing Cuban passionfruit raspberry cocktail is a vibrant & exotic blend of fresh passionfruit, raspberries and Cuban rum.

Cuba is famous for its meat dishes. Some of the main course choices for your party might be “Ropa Vieja”, “Masitas de Puerco” or marinated fried pork, oxtail stew or grilled ribs. For a lighter meal, you can offer “sandwich medianoche” that can be served either hot or cold, hence its name since you can eat them after a night of painting the town red. And where will you find more merriment than at a Cuban wedding? The midnight sandwich has grilled or fried pork slices with cheese pressed between toasted French bread slices with butter on both sides (and well pressed).

Add a fresh and colorful Cuban salad. You will only need tomatoes, onions and radish slices sprinkled with olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice. Or a chickpea salad with green and red peppers and sweet yellow onions with a dressing made from fresh lime juice, olive oil, and a pinch of cumin. Yummylicious!

It’s time for Desserts!

Pick some of these delicious temptations to complete your wedding menu. Flan served in individual cups and sprinkled with a little cinnamon or nutmeg, or “merenguitos” (mini meringues) made of egg whites beaten with sugar and then baked.

You also have arroz con leche topped with cinnamon and juicy raisins. Then, for some pastry or cake options, there are señoritas, pastelitos and capuchinos. Señoritas are confectionary made with layers of puff pastry filled with custard cream, served in a variety of vanilla or chocolate flavors. They are very similar to the Napoleon. Pastelitos are small pastry buns stuffed with guava, cream cheese, or shredded coconut drizzled with syrup. And the Cuban capuchinos and cabezotes are small cakes shaped like a yellow cone, soaked in a syrup made with cinnamon, orange and lemon peel, and anise. You will want to lick your fingers! (Just not at the wedding … do it in the kitchen) 😉

For the dessert table you may present sweet coconut candy, guava candy, more merenguitos or nougat.

Cuban Wedding Traditions

Let’s take a look at a couple of Cuban wedding traditions and feel free to incorporate something beyond the Cuban decor to your wedding!

Money is Always Welcome at the Onset of a New Lifetime Adventure

The money dance is another very old tradition at Cuban weddings. Guests would dance with the bride and pin money on her dress to help the couple off to a great start.

Usually, the bride’s family pays for the wedding, and both the bride and groom’s parents give an important gift to the newlyweds, like money or a house. Nice tradition, right? 😉

Cuban Wedding Favors

Another Cuban tradition is for the couple to thank their guests by giving them a small handmade gift or some personalized ribbons with their names on them. If the wedding calls for it, the favor becomes a good Cuban cigar to celebrate the union.

Proper Cuban-Inspired Wedding Attire for The Couple and Guests

Cuban wedding dresses are stunningly beautiful and white (if the bride is a virgin). If she’s not, tradition dictates her dress should be red. Fortunately this tradition is almost gone and a bride can wear a red wedding dress just because she wants to!

With so much dancing, delicious food and drinks to look forward to, dressing comfortably and elegantly is a must. Ladies may wear summer cocktail dresses, while gentlemen can wear linen guayaberas, shirts with tropical motifs and elegant fedora hats. Everything should remind you of old Havana and a tropical paradise.

Mouthwatering Ways to Display Doughnuts At A Wedding

Doughnut walls, doughnut cakes, doughnut bars and even doughnuts as wedding favors! Let’s explore these mouthwatering ways to display doughnuts at a wedding!

Discover the many ways to display doughnuts at a wedding! Iced coffee and donut bar for an outdoor wedding. You can do a hot chocolate and chocolate milk station with donuts instead.

All you need is love, and maybe a doughnut. Is there a better way to say “I want to spend the rest of my life with you” than to shove doughnuts into each other’s faces? Probably not. Forget cake. Forget pies and cupcakes. Forget everything you thought you knew about wedding desserts. Doughnuts bars and walls are the new wedding trend. Based on the pictures below, we’re not mad about it. Au contraire!! 🙂

Arguably the best part of this wedding trend is that doughnuts are inexpensive compared to fancily decorated cakes. Regular glazed yeast doughnuts cost $9/dozen on average. And much less than that at my local supermarket bakery. 😉 Not bad when you are trying to feed dessert to hundreds of people. If you are unimpressed by the price, think of all of the ways you can serve and display doughnuts at a wedding. They are a versatile addition to any celebration seeing as they can be displayed as a wall, tower, cake, or as a favor. Let us show you all the ways wedding doughnuts can impress (and please) your guests.

Doughnut Walls: The Next Big Thing At Weddings

A wall of doughnuts- that’s right. Sorry, brides. It’s going to be hard for you to be the center of attention with one of these around. Whether it’s a pegboard wall of doughnuts or a cute display of the bride and groom’s initials, can we all agree that these should be mandatory at weddings now?

Mouthwatering Ways To Display Doughnuts At A Wedding: Doughnut Bars

Don’t want to hang doughnuts on a wall for all to see? That’s ok. They are equally as delicious when served on a bar.

You can make an ode to doughnuts by building them into a tower. Pile them up with a ring toss or serve them with cute milk bottles and a straw or with plain delicious coffee. It will certainly warm up your guests tummies! Setup a doughnut stand next to the dance floor with lots of napkins to clean up the glazed sticky fingers to keep your guests energized.

On top of that, doughnuts can keep fresh for up to two days at room temperature. Let’s start decorating!

And let’s not forget about those tiny bites of sugary heaven: doughnut holes. Like any sweets addict knows, you must not let any part of the doughnut go to waste. Pair them up with toppings and syrups and the wedding doughnut bar is complete!

Doughnut Wedding Cakes: Delicious, Stunning & Affordable!

Do you love doughnuts enough to make them the main event? While some brides use doughnut walls or bars as side decorations, other brides love doughnuts to give them the center stage. And why shouldn’t they? Anyone who’s attended a wedding has had enough cake and buttercream frosting to last a lifetime. Serving a wedding doughnut cake tower will make guests remember your wedding for years to come. They make cake doughnuts for a reason, people. And we can’t think of reason better than this.

Or maybe we can. They can match your wedding colors and wedding style because of their huge variety of flavors. Who wouldn’t want to indulge their sweet tooth in but flavors like strawberry peppercorn, chocolate with pretzel sprinkles, and sea salt and bourbon maple?

Check out these unforgettable chocolate fountain ideas for weddings!

Not only are these doughnut wedding cakes super memorable but they are more affordable too. When the national average cost of a wedding cake is US$466+ and if it’s in New York or California, we should be budgeting an average of US$1,200+ on the low end, this yummy alternative is appealing in more ways than one.

No matter how you choose to present them, you can be sure that serving doughnuts instead of a traditional cake will make your wedding just a little more memorable.

Doughnuts as Wedding Favors

We can even give out doughnuts as wedding favors. Is there anything more delicious and inexpensive than that? 🙂

Perhaps you don’t want to make doughnuts the center of attention at your wedding. That’s why doughnuts as wedding favors will be a “hole” in one. 🙂 Every guest will appreciate having a midnight snack. It will leave their sweet tooth satisfied as they drive home, especially for those that have danced the night away.

Why Do People Think Sustainable Catering for Weddings is a Good Idea?

Let’s find out more about sustainable catering for weddings, and discover if you could contribute at least a bit to the health of our planet!

We share tips for planning a sustainable, locally sourced menu. Photography: Chaz Cruz. Purslane Catering.

Global warming. Carbon footprint. We are all concerned with Earth’s future. Couples can do their part by employing sustainable catering at their weddings. Discover what sustainable catering is and how it works.

Why Sustainable Catering for Weddings?

Food and beverage consumption are a crucial part of a wedding, and depending on how food is prepared, served and disposed of can have a significant impact on the environment.

Energy Consumption

Preparing food and beverages requires of a large amount of energy and water. Therefore, any discarded food or drink represents a waste of the energy and water that has already generated an unnecessary environmental impact.

Packaging Disposal

We also have to consider the amount of packaging that was used to deliver the food to the catering kitchen, as this can generate significant waste. Individual wrapping increases your carbon footprint, as this requires more disposable material.

Food Origin

There are three important aspects to consider regarding the origin of food and beverages in sustainable catering:

  1. Seasonality: If we choose to include out of season food on our sustainable catering menu, it will be necessary to import this food from other parts of the world, which means that it will ‘earn’ a larger ecological footprint due to the extra fuel for transport, for example, adding cherries to the winter wedding menu. Fresh and seasonal foods are a good choice for sustainable catering.
  2. Geographical origin: The further away the source of the food, the more fuel is required for transport, which increases the impact on the atmosphere. For this reason, there is a big difference between purchasing beef produced within 25 miles compared with buying from another country.
  3. The agro-industrial origin: Not all food and beverages are produced under the same conditions of environmental quality. Some farmers are much better than others in terms of showing environmental respect by their agricultural or industrial practices.

How to make your wedding more environmentally sound

Obviously, you will want a caterer who serves meals made with organic and/or locally sourced ingredients. But there are additional things to consider. If you have a responsible eco attitude, you should consider sustainable catering for your wedding. We recommend using creativity, synergy and solutions close to your location. Here are a few ideas for sustainable catering for weddings.

Make a realistic estimate of the quantity of food to be prepared. Ask yourself, how many guests will attend the wedding and who are the guests? Remember that men tend to eat more than women, and usually, women eat more than children.

Always take into consideration the seasonality of the menu items. Make sure the type of fish or fruits that you choose are available at the time of your wedding. If you are going to serve game at your reception, make sure it’s not a closed season.

Try to avoid frozen products. A frozen product needs extra energy to be frozen, and that creates a greater carbon footprint. Choosing a farm-to-table caterer, will help you make the right decisions.

Promote the use of locally sourced food and drinks. In addition, locally sourced food fosters socio-economic growth, so the local economy benefits from your spending. A wonderful idea is to feature a local gastro experience showcasing the local origin of the food. A gastronomic tour of sorts, we could say. 😉

Use eco-labeled products. This indicates that the environment was respected during production.

Use reusable utensils (glass, ceramics, etc.), and if they are disposable, be sure that they are compostable. And recycle!!!! Thus less waste will be generated.

Another great idea to avoid wasting food is to send your guests home with paper doggy bags.

Drinking water is very popular but also a very expensive natural resource to obtain. So in sustainable catering it is necessary to avoid excessive consumption of water and make sure all the water used is necessary and adds value. In the preparation of menus for sustainable catering, low water footprint food and beverages should be selected, trying to reduce the consumption of meat as much as possible, meat being one of the foods that has the largest water footprint.

Do expect a bigger sticker price for sustainable catering, as a caterer who uses local, organic and sustainable ingredients will usually charge from $145 – $250 per head, depending on where you are geographically located.
